Reports on Birth Preference Options

Many times as parents go about writing out their birth preferences, sometimes called a birth plan, they find out they have options previously unknown to them.

They might find samples at Birth Plans and wonder why one mother might want to avoid amniotomy (artificial breaking of the water bag). Another mother might hear that someone else was allowed to labor with no I.V. after being told this was not a negotiable intervention for her own birth and wonder at the discrepancy.

This page contains reports, free for personal use, that explain the origins of the interventions often found on birth plans, their rationale & medical indications for use, and the scientific evidence either supporting, or not supporting, their routine use.

These copyrighted reports may be printed out, with full attribution and without altering any portion of the material, by parents or childbirth professionals. They are also available via snail mail for at cost, plus shipping & handling. Contact Harbor & Hill for details.
